Embracing the southern boundaries of Charente, the Department of Dordogne is undisputedly famous for its gastronomy which includes wild boar, duck, goose, truffles (known as the "black diamond" of Périgord), walnuts and, of course, fine wines. Named after its majestic river which flows through deep gorges and medieval towns until it runs it course to the Atlantic Ocean at Bordeaux. The whole Department is one of many waterways with the Rivers Vezere, L`Isle and Dronne to name a few. The latter encircles the popular town of Brantome known as the "Venice of the Périgord" thus forming an island overlooked by its old monastic and abbey buildings. From here one can canoe downstream over a series of weirs to the pretty little town of Bourdeilles with its towering castle and Donjon "look-out tower". Little villages and ancient hamlets abound hidden in the undulating countryside amidst fields of sunflowers and vineyards. Superb Chateaux and Romanesque Churches keep guard over their protégés below. Mareuil-sur-Belle is one of Périgords ancient baronies and is a popular market town nestling beneath the walls of its ancient castle. The town offers an excellent range of shops and services including supermarket, wonderful boulangeries selling mouth-watering gateaux, speciality pate and foie gras shops, an excellent wine cave, internet point, banks, hairdressers etc. Also three restaurants and an inexpensive campsite on the edge of the town and bordering a little river. Through this area weekly markets abound including some annual speciality truffle and snail markets. Traditions are alive and well in the Dordogne!
