One of the sunniest Departments in south west France, probably best known for the production of Brandy based primarily around the towns of Cognac and Jarnac. Named after its fine river which meanders through the capital town of Angoulême westwards to the Atlantic Ocean. Water sport activities on offer include canoeing, boat hire, swimming and water skiing, or board the "Angoumois" for a cruise-on-theme trip down the river -gourmet cruise, Bacchus cruise or paper-making cruise, the latter visiting a traditional paper mill. The old town of Angoulême sits high above the river and its surrounding countryside. It boasts a maze of narrow pedestrianised cobbled streets lined with dozens of restaurants and street cafes. The town is famous not only for its floral displays but also for the many exciting and varied events held annually. "Le Festival Internationale de la Bandes Dessinée" each year in January, dedicated to cartoon strips is known as the European Capital of the comics. September brings historic motor racing enthusiasts to a town transformed into a street circuit for the "Circuit des Remparts" referred also to "Monaco without the sea"! November hosts Ludoland followed by Gastronomades, the latter bringing local Producers together offering their hand-crafted specialities such as pâté de foie gras, preserved goose and duck confits, goat cheeses etc., all to be washed down with the local aperitif "Pineau des Charentes" made from local wine and Cognac. The quieter ambiance of the sunflower filled fields and high forests offer excellent horse riding, cycling and walking facilities and the newly protected area of Parc Natural Régional "Perigord-Limousin" which stretches across southern Charente and down into its neighbour, the Dordogne. We have two associated offices in the Charente area:- Ruffec. An old town in the north of the departement, about 20 miles south of Poitiers, having a population of about 4000, a good selection of shops & services and markets every Wednesday & Saturday. There is a swimming pool, tennis courts, canoeing on the Charente river, and over 20 sports clubs. Info: www.mairie-ruffec.com. Chalais. Again an old town, dominated by its' Chateau. Situated in the south of the Department, close to the adjoining departments of Dordogne,Charente Maritime & Gironde. Smaller than Ruffec, with about 2000 inhabitants, it boasts one of the largest local markets, each Monday, apart from the normal selection of shops/supermarkets etc. Various sporting activities, and only about an hour from the sea.
