August has come and gone in a flash. The weather for the last two weeks has been pretty similar to that in the UK so the grass has changed colour from burnt brown to glorious green again. Swimming pool temperatures have dropped to about 24 degrees - totally unacceptable for this time of year but the brave will be brave and generally the kids don't care anyway.
We have seen a marked increase in people looking for houses to restore and renovation projects here in the Charente. Luckily we have just added several exceptional value properties to our books. PROPERTY FOR SALE IN THE CHARENTE The weather for September is looking good so things are definitely looking up. Holiday makers are departing, children back to school and the serious buyers are making appointments to view properties by the dozen. It is certainly a buyer's market but for sure we are not in the doldrums and silly offers are not being accepted. There are some good cheap flights on offer via. Ryanair from London Stansted to Angouleme, Poitiers and Bergerac from only 10 euros during October if booked by the end of August excluding any public holidays or major sporting events. So if you are looking for houses to restore or renovation projects in the Charente now is the time to come. Mushrooms of all sorts including the renowned Dordogne Cèpe are thrusting their way through the ground but only the locals seem to know where to find them! Vegetable gardens are sporting row upon row of juicy red tomatoes, aubergines, courgettes and peppers so pots of ratatouille are bubbling away boosted with the flavours of this years fresh garlic and rosé onions. The vines are not looking so good this year and no doubt the harvest will be small in comparison to other years but nonetheless the harvest is always a good excuse for lots of camaraderie, drinking, eating etc., and for new friendships to be formed. The major local highlight of the area is the "Circuit des Remparts" which takes place in Angouleme, capital of the Charente Department over the weekend of 19th/20th/21st September. This is a major historic motor racing event which attracts thousands of enthusiasts from all over Europe. A demanding street circuit made famous in the early sixties by the likes of Fangio and Sir Stirling Moss. It is a must for all lovers of old cars. Even if you are not, the buzz in the town with the roar emitting from the engines of Bugattis and a myriad of single seater racing cars, motoring extroverts swaggering through the pedestrianised cobbled streets of the old town, and the general melee of visitors trying to decide which restaurant to eat in, which bar to drink in or which grandstand to sit in is electric. Some even describe the event as Monaco without the sea! Autumn is looking good for the discerning buyer with completions on-line for the best Christmas present of your life.
