After an unusually wet Spring and late frosts most home-owners in the Dordogne in south west France have lost their crops of cherries, nectarines and peaches. The vines are not looking good either. On the plus side rivers are full to bursting so the canoeing season is off to a flying start and the escargot hunters are having a field-day. With the warmth that has now settled the first mushrooms are pushing their way upwards. Early potatoes are being harvested, likewise petit pois, mangetout and broadbeans. Suddenly grass cutting is becoming a major pastime, the smell of evening barbecues is in the air and swimming pools have hit the 30° barrier! The number of UK registered vehicles in the area has risen dramatically in the last week or so, there are cyclists everywhere and by 12 noon each day the lay-bys are full of picnickers. Bars and cafes in both the Charente and Dordogne have their tables spilling out onto the pavements and our local villages of Mareuil, Villebois Lavalette and Brantome have suddenly seen their weekly markets swell in both size and attendance. Dordogne estate agents are as usual busy talking to holidaymakers who have fallen in love woth the area and are considering a move to this part of France. Flights in and out of Angouleme, the capital town of the Charente, just forty minutes away are proving popular making it a cheap and easy alternative to visit the area for prospective house hunters from Stanstead Airport. In the meantime, the swallows swoop, the hoopoes hoot and the tourists arrive wearing this years strange array of baggy shorts! Such is life in the Dordogne sunshine !!
