SPRING IN THE DORDOGNE

Awakening every day over the past four weeks to very cold white frosty Dordogne mornings which quickly turn into vibrant blue skies filled with sunshine, one can breathe in the pure clear fresh air and feel energised for what tasks lie ahead whether it is working, dog walking or searching for that special Dordogne property.

The first tulips and daffodils are just into bloom and one has the right to really feel that "spring is in the air". Even some of the vines are just beginning to shoot as are the lilac trees. Even the catkins are just beginning to turn yellow.

Already the forerunners of the thousands of Canada Geese have flown overhead, the noise of them announcing their arrival long before one can spot the V-formation of each gaggle heading south, normally with a few stragglers desperately trying to keep up with the main flock, squawking "mummy, mummy wait for me" or so it seems!!

The warm Dordogne days are even fooling the butterflies and bees, a few of whom are venturing out only to wish they had not come late afternoon when the cold starts to set in again. Early evening the sunsets have been simply spectacular - the sort one would expect to see over the Sahara Desert. When darkness closes in the star formations are as clear as diamonds twinkling vibrantly in a coal black sky. MOVING TO THE DORDOGNE

The Dordogne is steeped in English history. When you visit the Dordogne you can understand why we fought the hundred years war for this amazing land. The foie gras and truffle season is nearing an end. Likewise the game shooting season is almost finished so with the two aforementioned delicacies, many a housewife is busy making pate of sanglier (wild boar), pigeon, rabbit, deer etc., no doubt laced with a heavy slug of Cognac.

Now is the time for the "locals" to start cracking walnuts that they collected in the autumn and have been drying on mesh frames in barns over the winter months. Walnut oil produced in the Dordogne is a speciality for dressings on summer salads. There are one or two local artisans in the area who have the wherewithal to do this, albeit with extremely old-fashioned "Heath Robinson" style equipment, thus producing the pure golden nectar so desired by gourmets.
