Despite property markets be depressed elsewhere, estate agents in the Charente are reporting busy times, with properties selling fast and vendors keen to take advantage of the up beat trading conditions. As leading estate agents with English speaking staff, we have seen a marked increase in buyers walking through our doors and many have taken the opportunity to pick up the numerous property bargains we have on offer. The beginning of March kicked off with some superb sunny weather in the Charente which encouraged locals to unearth their mowers and to make the first cut of the season. The countryside is blooming with daffodils, tulips and crocuses whilst the roadside verges are lined with yellow cowslips. The first flocks of Canada Geese have flown south - spring is definitely in the air, Easter is only weeks away and hopefully summer is just around the corner. The hunting season in the Charente has finished, the fishing season has begun. Vegetable seeds are being sown with each neighbour in competition with the next as to who will plant out their tomatoes first and shoes plants will be the largest! Mothering Sunday in the UK was Grandmother`s Day in France and the queues that Sunday morning outside florists had to be seen to be believed. No tiny posies for gransma - only the biggest and best displays would do and, as for the gateaux! Mon Dieu. Most of the local villages in the Charente are now preparing floats for the many Easter carnivals which will take place on the weekend of 22nd March. Funfairs will arrive, children will be in holiday spirit and the oldies will don their Sunday best. "Clochemerle" standard of bands will march through the streets playing their hearts out. In the evenings splendid firework displays will lighten the sky to finish off each days celebrations. Easter Monday is also a Public Holiday in France so no doubt some serious eating and drinking will take place.
